TUTTLE RECREATION FALL PROGRAMS INCLUDE “SCHOOL OF ROCK”

September 16, 2009 (Columbus, OH) – “Tuttle School of Rock” is among the fall program offerings at the Tuttle Park Recreation Center. Under the management of Camp Fire USA Central Ohio Council, the center is open for fall program registrations and drop-in activities now through September 25. A six week session of programs will begin Tuesday, September 28. Hours are Tuesday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. The center be closed the Saturdays of OSU home games, when the Tuttle Community Recreation Council offers football parking as a fundraiser for the center.

“The Tuttle School of Rock” is a group guitar lesson for ages 7 and up. The goal of the program is to offer low cost music lessons which will engage children in learning real music, not just playing “air guitar” or “Guitar Hero.” Lessons are $30 for the six week session. “Tuttle School of Rock” is scheduled for Fridays from 4:30 – 5:30 p.m.

Other Fall program offerings include ceramics, seasonal crafts, inline skating, street hockey, and Camp Fire USA’s unique youth development programs for Preschool and Elementary aged children. Family Nature Club will be offered Saturdays from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. Family Nights will be held the first Friday of each month, October 3, November 6, and December 4. Special events will include a Halloween Party on Friday, October 30, an “Empty Bowls” fundraiser for local food pantries on Saturday, November 14, and a Holiday party on Saturday, December 19.

Located north of The Ohio State University at 240 West Oakland Ave., Tuttle Park is one of the 11 recreation centers that closed in mid-February. Camp Fire USA Central Ohio Council has assumed operation of the center in an arrangement negotiated with the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department and supported by a grant from the Columbus Foundation. The Tuttle Recreation Center Community Recreation Council also provides community input and funding for supplies for programs and special events.

At least one of the Columbus recreation centers that closed in mid-February will reopen its doors sooner than expected. Mayor Michael Coleman announced during his State of the City address Feb. 26 the Camp Fire USA Central Ohio Council would assume operations of one of the 11 recreation centers closed because of cuts to the Department of Recreation and Parks 2009 budget.

Tuttle Recreation Center, located north of Ohio State University, will reopen in April. The recreation center is located in Tuttle Park, which also is home to the Tuttle Pool, one of four city pools scheduled to operate this summer. Tuttle is one of the most heavily used recreation centers in the city, serving about 57,000 participants last year, according to Camp Fire USA.

Camp Fire plans to offer the recreation center's traditional programming as well as specialized Camp Fire programs for families and children. "I'm guessing that it's going to feel enhanced," said Amy Boyd, chief executive officer of the Central Ohio council, referring to the addition of Camp Fire's morning preschool program, service learning programs for teenagers, club programming and a summer day camp.... City agrees to let group reopen Tuttle rec center

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Another Columbus recreation building will live again. The doors at Tuttle Recreation Center will swing open March 28, six weeks after the city closed it and 10 other centers in a cost-cutting move.

Camp Fire USA Central Ohio Council has worked out a deal with the city to run Tuttle and offer classes, open gym, day camps and Camp Fire programs. The city will continue to operate the center's outdoor swimming pool in the summer.

Tuttle is the second recreation program that has been saved. The city's senior-citizen craft store, the Golden Hobby Shop in German Village, is staying open with the help of volunteers and money that its board had saved. "It's wonderful they're going to keep Tuttle open," said Nicole Takas, whose children have taken classes there for several years. "But I'm saddened that the city of Columbus couldn't come through for their citizens."... Full article

Summer sleep-away camp is filling up earlier than usual

We are certainly ahead of the curve, we’ve never had this many registrations for summer camp in at this stage! It seems families recognize that the pricey summer vacation may be a long shot, but a summer camp experience is relatively inexpensive comparatively, and it gives everyone a break. Additionally with the new feature of being able to make payments directly online as the budgets permits, families are planning ahead and enrolling their campers earlier than normal. If you have questions about summer camp at Wyandot or would like a personal tour of camp, please contact our Camp Director Wes Supper,wes@centralohiocampfire.org

Camp Fire USA at the Ohio State Fair!

Hello Camp Fire Friends,

I am writing to you on behalf of the Camp Fire USA committee for the Ohio State Fair. The Fair has charged us with making our area and our building a place where fair visitors want to go. It is great to see all the youth's exhibits but we also want to have interactive activities for the visitors. In the past we have had “make it take it” crafts for everyone to do. We have also had a solar powered bird matching game that was made by a Northeast council member and a covered bridge donated by a covered bridge society.

Our greatest opportunity, provided by the Ohio State Fair is as a recruitment tool. There are nearly one million visitors to the Fair every year. Many of the people who come through our building are interested in Youth programming. There are some that already belong to one type of group but are open to being involved with more. We have active members now that were 4-H and Camp Fire people. The best witness of Camp Fire programming is you. I need you, you and your club, you and your family, you and your grandchildren, I need you to volunteer this year at the Ohio State Fair.

This year the building has the theme of “Green Scene – It is easy being Green”. We have planned many hands on activities to be in our area and outside on the lawn, as well as “make it take its”. Our need for volunteers becomes even greater with the amount of interactive areas we will have.

Please consider helping out this year. The schedule reflects two hour volunteer time slots. We will give you tickets for admission for the day(s) you help! If you could e-mail me your name, phone number, and address as well as some time slots you are intersed in at : taschaefer@wowway.com I will get the calender organized.

We will be holding a raffle for a doghouse that was made through Pads for Paws sponsored by AIA and made by East Linden Elementary Students and volunteers from area businesses. Part of the proceeds will be going to Camp Fire. Look for the doghouse at the fair and raffle forms on the website just before the fair begins.

On Aug 1st at 4:30 we will have an activity in our building where we will be making furniture out of “trash” and competitions to build skyscrapers from paper. Everyone is welcome. We would also like to include “models” who have created new attire by recycling old “trash” into something new, during our Style Show on Aug. 2nd. Contact me if you are interested in participating. No age limit on this part of the Show.

I would love to have a couple of days when we could be out on the lawn doing some simple cooperative games with Fair visitors. If anyone has an interest in being involved in that please contact me.

The Ohio State Fair begins on July 29th and ends on Aug. 9th this year. As usual we will be holding an opening day picnic at 1:00 pm. On Aug. 1st at 4:30 we have our “building more than campfires” activity. On Aug. 2nd at 4:30 we have the Style Show. On Aug. 8th at 3:00 is our Discovery and Horizon Baked Goods judging. On Aug. 9th at 4:30 we will be holding our Closing Council Fire and Awards Ceremony. You are welcome at all of these events and all the times in between. Please join us.
Thank you for your help!

Contact me with any questions or ideas and see you at the fair,
